I've heard them called Ice Cream dolls as well.  I don't know the actual origin of those woolly haired red nosed things.  Makes me think they were big in Japan or Europe and never really were marketed properly here (here being Canada/US).

I received the girl doll for Christmas in 1985. There was a recall for them right after Christmas because of a chemical scare making some children sick which ended towards the end on January 1986. The chemical may possibly have come from the spray they used to kill bugs and bacteria on items being shipped to the US from other countries. There was just the 2 and were made in Taiwan. After the recall they were not very popular in the US.
