{"id":13412,"date":"2019-07-21T15:10:58","date_gmt":"2019-07-21T15:10:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ghostofthedoll.co.uk\/tracingghosts\/tg-wp\/paternal-grandfather-barnes-tree\/cowley-jesse-white\/"},"modified":"2021-07-03T21:19:05","modified_gmt":"2021-07-03T21:19:05","slug":"cowley-jesse-white","status":"publish","type":"my_family_tree","link":"https:\/\/ghostofthedoll.co.uk\/tracingghosts\/my_family_tree\/maternal-grandfather-mayhew-tree\/cowley-jesse-white\/","title":{"rendered":"[3GGP] Jesse White COWLEY &#038; Maria Theresa COX"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My 3rd great grandfather <strong>Jesse White COWLEY<\/strong> was born <strong>1833<\/strong> in Clapham, Bedfordshire (in a cottage adjoining Clapham Folley Inn), and was the first of five children born to <a href=\"https:\/\/ghostofthedoll.co.uk\/tracingghosts\/my_family_tree\/maternal-grandfather-mayhew-tree\/cowley-james\/\"><strong>James COWLEY<\/strong><\/a>, a farm bailiff and agricultural labourer, and <a href=\"https:\/\/ghostofthedoll.co.uk\/tracingghosts\/my_family_tree\/maternal-grandfather-mayhew-tree\/cowley-james\/\"><strong>Susan Maria WHITE<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>My 3rd great grandmother <strong>Maria Theresa COX<\/strong> was born around <strong>1832<\/strong> in Stevington, Bedfordshire, and was the first of four children born to <a href=\"https:\/\/ghostofthedoll.co.uk\/tracingghosts\/my_family_tree\/maternal-grandfather-mayhew-tree\/cox-samuel\/\"><strong>Samuel COX<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/ghostofthedoll.co.uk\/tracingghosts\/my_family_tree\/maternal-grandfather-mayhew-tree\/cox-samuel\/\"><strong>Elizabeth KEECH<\/strong><\/a>. John died very shortly after this and they didn&#8217;t have any children together.\u00a0<strong>Maria<\/strong> married again to <strong>Jesse<\/strong> 20th Oct <strong>1856<\/strong> in Stevington, Bedfordshire when they were about 23 and 24 years old. They had five children together between 1857-1873, my 2nd great grandfather Joseph being their second born (the two KEECH lines are unrelated as far back as I&#8217;ve been able to research).<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>Susan Sophia Cowley<\/strong> (7 May 1857 &#8211; 18 Jun 1836); unmarried; lace maker and housekeeper<\/span><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ghostofthedoll.co.uk\/tracingghosts\/my_family_tree\/maternal-grandfather-mayhew-tree\/cowley-joseph-james\/\"><strong>Joseph James Cowley<\/strong><\/a> (7 Feb 1859 &#8211; 23 Aug 1935); married <a href=\"https:\/\/ghostofthedoll.co.uk\/tracingghosts\/my_family_tree\/maternal-grandfather-mayhew-tree\/cowley-joseph-james\/\"><strong>Eliza Keech<\/strong><\/a> 1881; coachman &amp; groom<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>Amelia Ann Cowley<\/strong> (1863-1956); married <strong>John Smith<\/strong> 1891; general labourer&#8217;s wife<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>Samuel Earnest Cowley<\/strong> (1865-1936); married <strong>Frances Ward<\/strong> 1891; coachman &amp; groom<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>Jesse William Cowley<\/strong> (31 Oct 1873 &#8211; 1946); married <strong>Miriam Elizabeth Bowyer<\/strong> 1898; boot maker &amp; sub postmaster<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Jesse<\/strong> worked as cord wainer (aka boot and shoe maker), beginning his apprenticeship at Kimbolton, Huntingdonshire which was about 15 miles away from his home. The <strong>1851<\/strong> census finds 19 year old Jesse working as an apprentice in Kimbolton, and the head of the household was a boot maker named John FRYER. By the following year Jesse was living in Thrapston due to his old master dying. He continuing his apprenticeship there with a new master and also began teaching at Sunday School. Jesse moved to Stevington in the January of <strong>1855<\/strong> after learning there was room for a shoemaker and married local lady Maria the following year. <strong>Maria<\/strong> worked as a lace maker, but the 1861 census also recorded her as a shoe binder, so she presumably helped out in the workshop with her husband. The family lived at Church Street in Stevington (next door to the pub) right up until Jesse retired.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Maria<\/strong> died from heart disease on 22nd Jan <strong>1891<\/strong> age 59. In <strong>1899<\/strong> Jesse took over the local Post Office as well as continuing to work as a shoemaker, running both businesses up until <strong>1909<\/strong> (age 76) when he passed them both on to youngest son Jesse (although was still recorded as a bootmaker in 1911). Jesse and eldest daughter Susan moved just around the corner to the Almshouses on Park Road shortly after the 1911 census, and in <strong>1914<\/strong> he was interviewed by the Bedfordshire Times and Independent about his life in Stevington (below), which even included a photo of the octogenarian.<\/p>\n<p>Jesse died on 20th Dec <strong>1925<\/strong> aged 92.
