B. 10.<\/li>\n<li>Country of Service: United Kingdom<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">*incorrectly named<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>Frederick CARTER<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Frederick CARTER <\/strong>was born late March 1900 (exact date unknown, but after the 21st) in either Westcliff-On-Sea or Southchurch in Essex and was the <strong>seventh<\/strong> of eight children born to parents <strong>Edward CARTER,<\/strong> a bricklayer born 1867 in East Woodhay, Hampshire, and <strong>Annie Eliza CARTER <\/strong>nee <b>PULLEN <\/b>born 1867 in Stoke Poges, Buckinghamshire. Edward and Annie married in 1887 in Stoke Poges and moved around quite a bit.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>William<\/strong> <strong>Carter<\/strong> &#8211; born 1888 in Stoke Poges, Buckinghamshire<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>Daisy<\/strong> <strong>Ellen<\/strong> <strong>Carter<\/strong> &#8211; born 16 Feb 1889 in Stoke Poges, Buckinghamshire<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>Charles Reginald Theobald Carter<\/strong> &#8211; born 20th Dec 1890 in Horfield, Gloucestershire<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>Christie<\/strong> <strong>Carter<\/strong> (aka Christopher) &#8211; born 27th Dec 1893 in Horfield, Gloucestershire<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>Robert<\/strong> <strong>Edward<\/strong> <strong>Carter<\/strong> &#8211; born 27th Oct 1895 in Cardiff, Wales<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>Bertie Carter<\/strong> (aka Albert William) &#8211; born 24th Oct 1898 in Westcliff-On-Sea, Essex (also stated to be born in Prittlewell)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><em><strong>Frederick<\/strong> <strong>Carter<\/strong> &#8211; born Mar 1900 in Westcliff-On Sea, Essex (also stated to be born in Southchurch)<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>Violet<\/strong> <strong>Carter<\/strong> &#8211; born Oct-Nov 1902 in Southchurch, Essex<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In 1901, the family were living at 3 Fernbrook Avenue, Southchurch, Essex except for their daughter Daisy, who was living with her paternal grandparent in Stoke Poges (where she remained until her marriage in 1919). Frederick was &#8220;age 1&#8221;, born &#8220;Westcliff-On-Sea&#8221;. Edward&#8217;s brother James had also moved to Essex about the same time and was living in the Southend-On-Sea area working as a builder.<\/p>\n<p>By 1911 the family was divided. Their mother <strong>Annie<\/strong> had died in 1909 and their father <strong>Edward<\/strong> and eldest son <strong>William <\/strong>are nowhere to be found. <strong>Daisy<\/strong> was still living with her paternal grandmother Eliza and aunt Kate in Stoke Poges, age 22 and working as a domestic housemaid. Eliza specified she had given birth to seven children, one of which had died. I have identified which of Eliza&#8217;s children died before 1911 and it wasn&#8217;t Edward. <strong>Charles<\/strong> was boarding in Prittlewell (aged 21), and working as a Bricklayer. I&#8217;ve not found <strong>Christie<\/strong> in 1911 who would have been 17, and <strong>Robert<\/strong> (at age 15) turned out to be in Canada. <strong>Bertie<\/strong> and <strong>Frederick<\/strong> were boarding together at Love Lane in Rayleigh, Essex (age 10 &amp; 12) with a widow called Alice Gertrude Wilkinson and her 1 year old adopted son. <strong>Violet<\/strong> was also boarding; she was in Barling, Essex with George &amp; Margaret Horner (aged 8, but recorded as 7), their three children and two more young boarders.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Frederick<\/strong> and <strong>Bertie<\/strong> moved from Rayleigh to Hadleigh between 1911-14, and were boarding together at &#8220;Ivydene&#8221;, Short Road, Hadleigh when the war broke out (aged about 14 &amp; 16).<\/p>\n<p>When <strong>Frederick<\/strong> <strong>enlisted<\/strong> on <strong>21st Mar 1915<\/strong> into the <strong>Rifle Brigade (Prince Consort&#8217;s Own) 10th Battalion <\/strong>he was living at <strong>Church Street, Hadleigh<\/strong>\u00a0working as a <strong>Baker<\/strong>. He gave his age as <strong>19 years, 0 months<\/strong>, but was actually only <strong>14 <\/strong>(just about to turn 15) and 5 feet 2 inches tall. He lists his sister Daisy Carter as his next of kin.<\/p>\n<p>On <strong>24th Feb 1916<\/strong> whilst stationed at Seaford, Frederick was reverted from <strong>Acting Corporal<\/strong> to <strong>Rifleman<\/strong> due to <em>&#8220;tampering with and reading a comrades private correspondence&#8221;<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Frederick was posted to <strong>France<\/strong> on <strong>23rd Mar 1916<\/strong>, so had either just turned 16 or was just about to. His casualty form shows he was admitted in the field with myalgia on 1st Aug and then influenza on 6th. He rejoined his battalion on the 19th Aug and <strong>died in action<\/strong> on <strong>3rd Sep 1916<\/strong> at Guillemont most likely during battle of the Somme. He was aged <b>16\u00bd<\/b>, although the <em>Essex Newsman <\/em>incorrectly stated him to be a year younger than he was. His sister &#8220;Mrs Humphrey&#8221; (Daisy) is listed as his only blood relative on a document filled out at least three years after his death. Daisy was also sited as next of kin on their brother Robert&#8217;s military enlistment papers in 1915.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>&#8220;Another Hadleigh soldier, Rifleman Fred. Carter, of the Rifle Brigade, has bee killed at the age of 15\u00bd years. He enlisted shortly before his 14th birthday.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Essex Newsman &#8211; Saturday 04 November 1916<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Frederick was posthumously awarded the <strong>British Medal<\/strong> and <strong>Victory Medal<\/strong> but they were returned unclaimed in 1921 and the index card has a note to &#8220;<em>request authority to dispose of medals<\/em>&#8220;. There is a receipt signed by his sister dated 11th Nov 1920 amongst his military records, but it doesn&#8217;t say what for.<\/p>\n<p>What happened to Frederick&#8217;s siblings?<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>William<\/strong> disappears after the 1901 census, and have been unable to find out what happened to him.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Daisy<\/strong> married in 1919 at age 30 to <strong>James Humphrey<\/strong>\u00a0and don&#8217;t appear to have had any children. She lived in Falcutt, Northamptonshire where she died in 1979 a age 89.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Charles<\/strong> joined the <strong>Royal Navy<\/strong> in December 1911 and served all through WWI and then again in WWII. I haven&#8217;t found a marriage for him. He died in 1965 in Essex at age 74.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Robert<\/strong> was sent to <strong>Canada<\/strong> in 1909 at age 13, most likely because he had just been orphaned. He joined the <strong>Canadian Army<\/strong> in 1915 at age 19 (although he stated to be 22), and left Canada with them in 1916. I haven&#8217;t pin pointed him in the 1911 Canadian census, but he was most likely employed as a farm hand in Muirkirk, Ontario going by other information found on travel documents. He returned to Canada after the war in 1921 with his wife <strong>Lily Martha Carter <\/strong>nee<strong> Way<\/strong>, and lived the rest of his life there working as a farmer. They had at least one daughter who died aged 18, and Robert himself died in 1965 aged 69 (shortly before his brother Charles died).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Christie<\/strong> married <strong>Rosetta Frost<\/strong> in Southend-On-Sea in 1919, where they were still living in 1939. They had two children and he worked as a general labourer. I&#8217;ve not found him in 1911 when he would have been 17, nor been able to confirm his death.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bertie <\/strong>married <strong>Rose Emily Argent<\/strong> in 1917 in Southend-On-Sea when he was 18 and she 19. Bertie and Rose had three children in quick succession between 1918-21, and then in 1923 the family emigrated to <strong>Australia<\/strong>. He died in Perth in 1979 aged 80.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Frederick <\/strong>(as above)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>I haven&#8217;t been able to trace <strong>Violet\u00a0<\/strong>after 1911.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">Family Tree<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Frederick&#8217;s father <strong>Edward John CARTER<\/strong> was born <strong>1867<\/strong> in East Woodhay, Hampshire and was the fifth of seven children born to <strong>Jeremiah CARTER<\/strong> and <strong>Eliza COPE<\/strong> (five of which were boys). Jeremiah worked as a Bricklayer, mostly in Stoke Poges, Buckinghamshire, although the family moved around a bit during the mid-1860&#8217;s into the 1870&#8217;s. Jeremiah&#8217;s father <strong>James CARTER<\/strong> (wife <strong>Catherine<\/strong>) was an agricultural labourer in Stoke Poges and Eliza&#8217;s father <strong>James COPE<\/strong> (wife <strong>Amelia GODLEY<\/strong>) was a farmer then licensed victualler in Portsmouth, Hampshire. In 1861 he was running The Highlander at 34 Oyster Street, and in 1871 the Shipping &amp; Mercantile Tavern also on Oyster Street.<\/p>\n<p>Frederick&#8217;s mother <strong>Annie Eliza PULLEN<\/strong> was born <strong>1867<\/strong> in Stoke Poges, Buckinghamshire and was the eighth of nine children born to <strong>William PULLEN<\/strong> and <strong>Mary GALE<\/strong>. His mother was already dead when Frederick was killed, and his father nowhere to be found. As his last place of residence before enlisting, and possibly his brother was still living there in 1917, this must be why Frederick is on the Hadleigh War Memorial.<\/p>\n ","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Frederick CARTER was born Mar 1900 in Southchurch, Essex.
