My Little Pony :: Takara ~ Ponies

My Little Pony was also produced in Japan by Takara in 1985, and looked nothing like the Hasbro version! The line was called "My Little Pony - Stylish Pony" and they were a small series of upright poseable pony figures (adults and babies) with large heads and brushable hair. There were also fashions and playsets. All items are highly sought after.

There were many "fakie" babies produced after Takara stopped production of varying quality.

Ponies

There were two main characters called Milky and Pinky, who were twin sisters. They also had twin baby sisters called Lily and Popo which were smaller ponies. There were also four other characters the same size as Milky and Pinky. The six adult ponies were poseable, whereas the two baby ponies were not. The adults measured about 5 inches high.

Adult ponies have no manufacturing marks on their bodies, only the babies were marked. Some fakie babies have a faint Takara mark, but most have nothing.

These are all eight known ponies together for comparison, with more details below. Ami Ami is the scarcest, but they are all pretty rare to come across (and expensive)!

  • Milky - light yellow body with pink mane & tail
  • Pinky - light pink body with purple mane & tail
  • Lily (baby) - light yellow body and pink mane & tail
  • Popo (baby) - light pink body with purple mane & tail
  • Ami Ami ("braided") - light blue body with teal mane & tail + two braids top of head
  • Fuwa Fuwa ("fluffy") - light pink body with dark pink frizzy mane & tail
  • Kuru Kuru ("curly") - light green body with green mane & tail + two curly pig tails sides of head
  • Sara Sara ("silky") - light yellow body with long yellow mane & tail

Milky & Pinky

Milky and Pinky each came with a dress, brush, hair accessories still on the manufacturing frame, and a card with their photo on. There were several versions of them sold wearing different outfits, which were also sold separately. The ponies remained the same from outfit to outfit.

The text on the top of the packaging is Japanese for My Little Pony. The bottom of the packaging translates to "Fashionable Pony".

  • Milky - yellow body and pink hair
  • Pinky - pink body with purple hair

Milky

There was a wedding version on both Milky and Pinky, and the dresses were also sold separately.

Pinky

These two dresses were also sold separately.

This is later addition packaging. Pinky is wearing the same dress as pictured on the box back (Kuru Kuru was also sold in this striped dress), but I don't think the veil is correct as it goes with a wedding dress and there were wedding versions of both Milky and Pinky. She may be in a wrong box, but this it the only image I have found of this particular edition so far.

Packaging Back

This is the back of the original packaging, which showed Milky, Pinky, Lily and Popo.

This is the back of later packaging, showing their four friends in the upper left.

These are the picture cards the earlier releases came with.

Ochame Fashion Ponies

Milky and Pinky's four friends were sold in differently designed packaging. Their names were descriptions of their hair styles and Ami Ami is the scarcest of them all. I have found three of the four outfits sold separately.

  • Ami Ami ("braided") - light blue body with teal mane & tail + two braids top of head
  • Fuwa Fuwa ("fluffy") - light pink body with dark pink frizzy mane & tail
  • Kuru Kuru ("curly") - light green body with green mane & tail + two curly pig tails sides of head
  • Sara Sara ("silky") - light yellow body with long yellow mane & tail

Packaging

This is the back of the above boxes. Ami Ami is shown with blue hair, but was in fact teal.

These are the sides of the box with some cute illustrations.

The publicity image has the pony colours all mixed up!

Hair Designer Sets

These two hair accessory themed sets came with lots of little accessories. There were two versions, one for Milky and one for Pinky.

Babies

There were two (official) baby ponies, twin sisters called Lily and Popo. They were sold with two different playsets and possible just on their own as a pair of ponies. They were non-poseable and were moulded slightly differently to each other. The pair which came with the bubble bath playset had drain holes in the bottom, the others did not. They were sold undressed.

  • Lily - yellow body (arms up) and pink hair
  • Popo - pink body (arms down) with purple hair

This catalogue image shows them as poseable but I've never seen any like this.

Other Ponies

These two images are from the 1985 Takara toy catalogue and show some ponies I have found no evidence for.

Plush

Plush versions of Milky and Pinky.

The Land of Close Friends

This image show babies Lily & Popo with ten sets of different animal twins.
